Business Awards

On 17 November Mayor Angelo Tsirekas hosted an awards ceremony to celebrate the achievement of 71 long serving businesses from the City of Canada Bay. Businesses that have been trading in the area for 25, 50, 75 and 100 years were presented with a newly created Business Recognition Award. Mayor Tsirekas said: “Business is one of the cornerstones of our community and Council have committed to supporting their contribution through our economic development program. “We are aware of the many challenges facing our small business sector and felt that we should recognise the achievements of our more established business community, which is why we have created this award. The majority of small businesses in Australia will not survive for even five years in operation, but Canada Bay is fortunate to have a number of firms with a long tradition in the City.” One winner was Bill Barlow of Barlow’s Music, a specialist entertainment retailer servicing people worldwide with customised musical arrangements, from his Concord West base since 1970. When asked about working in the City for over 25 years, Bill said: “I have lived in Concord almost all my life and it has always been a great place to live and work.” Other notable award recipients were Abbotsford Boat Shed and Concord Golf Club, which have both provided over a century of service to the area, commencing trading in the 1800’s. The event was held at award winning local function center Castel D’Oro, which has already won an Inner West Small Business Award, A Champions of Champion Award and now the City of Canada Bay Business Recognition Award for services to the area for over 31 years. The Business Recognition Awards Program will be an annual event and will celebrate long serving businesses as they reach these significant milestones into the future.
